Mary Morse Hall - Exterior

Mary Morse Hall is a historic traditional residence hall located at Mills College in Oakland. From its location atop Prospect Hill, students look out upon the Rhododendron Courtyard shared with Ethel Moore Hall. You enter the building through a beautiful living room with high ceilings, a favored gathering spot for Mary Morse residents.

UC Berkeley students will share the common spaces with Mills College students. This will be a great opportunity for students to engage in a cross-institutional and cross-discipline exchange.

The projected rate is $12,495 which is less than the double-room rate of $16,022 per academic year on the UC Berkeley campus. Please note: Mills College is considered on-campus housing for budgetary purposes with the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office.

Smoking is not allowed in any student residence, any campus building, or within 30 feet of building entrances, doors or windows. Smoking of medical marijuana is not permitted on campus.

What services and facilities at Mills College will UC Berkeley students be able to take advantage of?

UC Berkeley students residing at Mills will be issued Mills College ID cards that will grant them access to key-card access to the residence halls and will serve as their meal plan Points card.  In addition, this card will give them access to many services on the Mills Campus.  Services available include sports and recreation facilities, computer labs, the library, and the dining halls.

 
In addition to residential study areas, are there any other areas where UC Berkeley students can study on the Mills Campus?

UC Berkeley students will have access to the F.W. Olin Library for study during regularly scheduled hours.  There also are select computer labs across campus that students will be able to access.

 
What kind of in-hall staffing support will serve as resources/ support for Mills College residents?

Both Mills College and UC Berkeley staff support will live in the residence halls, and may provide support to UCB residents.  One UCB student will serve in the role of a Community Advisor, and will collaborate with the residential education staff at Mills in responding to student concerns.

 
Are bathrooms single gender or all gender?

Restrooms in Mary Morse hall are multi-stalled bathrooms that are gender inclusive/ all gender bathrooms.

 
What utilities are included in the cost for a Mills room?

All gas, electric, water, and trash is covered in the cost of a residence hall.  Students will have access to the Mills wireless network.  Cable TV is provided in the Residence Hall recreation rooms.  In addition, the cost of laundry is included in the housing fee.

 
Does Mill’s provide custodial services?

Commons areas, including bathrooms, will be cleaned by Mills College’s custodial staff daily.  Students are responsible for cleaning their room.

 
I am concerned about safety. What kind of safety measures are present on the Mills campus?

Mills College is a closed campus- meaning all visitors to campus must check in at the gatehouse before entering campus.  In addition to this presence by security officers, Resident Assistants also conduct building walks to insure residents are safe and sound, and serve on an on call rotation to respond to any incidents that may arise.

 
How does the meal plan work at Mills?

UCB students will receive a meal plan at Mills College to dine at either the Founder Commons or Tea Shop.  This meal plan contains 1000 points an academic semester, and roughly approximates to 93-148 meals per semester, depending on use.

How does transportation to and from Mills and UC Berkeley work?

UC Berkeley and Mills College have an existing shuttle that drives students to and from campus.  To check the shuttle schedule, please consult the Mills Shuttle schedule.  An additional shuttle time at 10pm will be added to the schedule on weekdays, to accommodate for UCB students with late classes.

 

UCB students may access the Mills shuttle by showing the driver their Mills College ID.  

 
Can I purchase a parking permit at Mills and bring a vehicle?

Yes, parking is available for students at Mills in the Richard’s lot or other commuter locations on campus for a $60 fee/year.  UCB students may contact the Mills Department of Public Safety to purchase a permit.

 

Students who are interested in driving to and from UC Berkeley's campus would also need to work with the UC Berkeley Parking and Transportation office to apply for and purchase a student parking permit.

 
How can residents receive mail at Mills?

UCB students qualify to receive a personal mailbox (PMB) at the Mills Mail and Copy Center for the duration of their housing contract.  Students will register for a PMB with the Mail and Copy Center on campus at Adams Plaza. Mail should be addressed as follows:

Move-in Information
When can I move into my room?

Housing contract dates are the same as the UCB residence halls, meaning students may move in beginning Saturday, August 20th. The halls will close for winter break. Students will need to move out of their rooms for the summer by Sunday May 14th, 2017.

How do I get my Key on move-in day?

Saturday, August 20th: Keys are issued at 8:30 a.m at the Oval by Mills hall and at Sage Hall until 2 p.m during orientation. There will be 2 key issuing stations during orientation: the Oval is for students that have sent in their ID photos and Sage hall 139 is for students that will need to take their photo in the moment. (Students will need to bring a form of ID with them to pick up their key packets.) After 2 p.m, students will need to work with Public Safety to collect their key packet. Please tell Public Safety at the front gate that you are a Berkeley residential student at Mills College and they will provide you with your key packet.

August 21st: Students will need to work with Puclic Safety to collect their key packet. Please tell Public Safety at the front gate that you are Berkeley residential students at Mills College and they will provide you with your key packet. (Students will need to bring a form of ID with them to pick up their key packets.)

August 22nd-26th: Keys are issued at 9 a.m in Sage Hall 139 until 5 p.m. (Students will need to bring a form of ID with them to pick up their key packets.) After 5 p.m, students will need to work with Public Safety to collect their key packet. How large are the residence hall rooms? Are they furnished?

One of the special features about the residences at Mills is that each room is unique. These are not cookie-cutter halls with identical rooms; each one is slightly different.

All rooms have a standard twin bed, desk, chair, small bookshelf, and dresser. Mills housing is spacious and charming.

What size linens will I need to bring?

All beds at Mills are standard twin size.
