Griffin-Desta, Jerlena - Executive Director
jerlena@berkeley.edu | (510) 643-6849
Jerlena came to UC Berkeley in 1995 as the Assistant Director of Residential Programs. Her responsibilities have increased over time to reflect the current name of the unit - Student Development. The Office of Student Development is a unit within Residential and Student Service Programs and Student Affairs that is primarily responsible for programs and services geared toward residential and first year students. With over 90% of all new students to Cal attending orientation, OSD is effectively the Gateway to the University, as we also interact daily with the 6000 residential undergraduates, and 3000 students and families that live in university-run residences. Jerlena is proud of the many accomplishments of the staff within OSD, and finds it quite rewarding to be working at a first-rate institution like Cal. |

I arrived at Cal in 1999 after working in colleges and universities from coast to coast. Cal is the largest and one of the most exciting. Three reasons I love being here are: I get to read about and design research projects related to the effect of the university experience on students, I work with terrific people, and the student population at Cal is the most amazing and talented group I have ever served. If you want to talk about student research, the impact of technology on higher education, or raid my candy dish, please stop by my office on the 3rd floor of the RSSB.
