Family Housing Renewals

Residents of University Village are asked to renew their rental agreement each year. The renewal process happens annually each spring semester. You will receive email reminders when it’s time to renew.

Why renewals?

The university annually reviews current eligibility and conduct compliance, including being on a current rental agreement. If you plan to continue to live in family student housing, you need to renew your agreement.

Please note: There is no housing application fee, security deposit, or first month’s rent required to renew your rental agreement in the UC Berkeley Housing Portal.

Who does not need to renew?

You do not need to renew your rental agreement for the next term if:

  • You are graduating in May or Summer Sessions.
  • You are a postdoctoral scholar or visiting scholar. If your appointment is extended and you are in need of housing, you will need to request a housing extension. Extensions are contingent on availability and the housing wait list.
  • You are graduating or filing your doctoral dissertation in August.

If you are not renewing because you are moving out, be sure to email your Intent to Vacate (ITV) form to apts@berkeley.edu with at least 30-days notice. The Intent to Vacate form can be downloaded on the Family Student Housing Move-Out page. Please note, failure to submit the ITV form with at least 30-days notice will result in additional charges.

  • If you are graduating in spring, you may remain in family student housing up to June 30 by submitting your Intent to Vacate no later than May 30.
  • Summer graduates may remain in family student housing up to August 31 by submitting the Intent to Vacate form no later than June 30.

What is the process for renewing my rental agreement?

There are two phases to renew in the Housing Portal. For questions about family student housing renewal, please email apts@berkeley.edu.

Phase One: Use your Calnet credentials to log in to the UC Berkeley Housing Portal and complete the Family Student Housing Application for the next academic year. Be sure to manage family members when you renew:

  • Your family members who are living with you will be auto-populated on the upgraded portal and you will find their names and dates of birth at the bottom of the Family Info page of your housing account.
  • If there are new family members to add to the rental agreement, please add their names and dates of birth on the Family Info page and upload the required documentation to show a family relationship.
  • If a family member listed is no longer living with you, please remove their name from your housing account on the Family Info page.

Phase Two: Residents who have completed Phase One will receive an email directing them to return to the Housing Portal to continue the application, including: updating emergency contacts, designating FERPA access, and choosing whether or not to opt into GradGuard personal property insurance. The final step will be to electronically sign the rental agreement. If you have a spouse or partner, they will receive an email to sign the rental agreement as well.

A confirmation email with a signed copy of the rental agreement will be emailed to you once the renewal process is complete.
