Single graduate students in any field of study can apply to any of our four graduate apartment complexes, but certain cohorts receive priority. Most single-occupancy apartments are given to students in a priority cohort for that location. For details about eligibility and priority at each apartment, visit Graduate Eligibility for Tenancy. The earliest applicants receive priority across all categories.
How do I apply for graduate student housing?
Apply through the Housing Portal starting mid-February for the following academic year. Please refer to our graduate housing application guides linked below.

Most single graduate student apartments are furnished, with some unfurnished options at Manville Apartments. For details, visit Furnishings in My Room. Most or all utilities are included with graduate student housing, please visit each apartment page for details about included utilities and amenities.

If you do not see the Single Student Apartments option on your Profile Summary page in the Housing Portal, it most likely means your student classification may be incorrectly classified as an undergraduate or as a Summer Session student. Please contact graduatestudenthousing@berkeley.edu or call (510) 642-9983 to correct your classification.
Graduate housing is not guaranteed. We truly wish we could accommodate everyone, but availability is limited and demand is high, especially for studios and one-bedroom apartments.
All graduate students who do not receive a housing offer will be placed on a wait list. If there are cancellations throughout the year, wait listed students will be contacted about vacancies. To increase your chances of receiving a housing offer, we recommend that you list “any room type, any location” as your final housing preference. You can change your preferences in the Housing Portal at any point before receiving or accepting an offer.
Housing agreements generally begin in mid-August and end July 31 the following year, with the exception of spaces undergoing a summer refresh or new building construction. For details, visit Graduate Housing Assignment Process and Offers.
No, subleasing is not permitted. Violation of this policy may result in eviction, legal fees, and/or conduct charges.
