Students are billed for housing through CalCentral. Your account will be charged based on your housing type, as listed below. Students are responsible for ensuring payments are submitted on time. Postdoctoral and visiting scholars are billed through the Housing Portal and payments can be made via the Housing Portal or e-bill.

Undergraduate student billing and payments
Undergraduate student housing payments are due in CalCentral each billing cycle. Charges are billed to CalCentral in five installments per semester.
- Undergraduate students are not billed monthly for campus housing.
- All housing installments for each semester are posted simultaneously: five at the beginning of fall semester, five at the beginning of spring semester.
- Installment payments are due in CalCentral each billing cycle. The billing cycle runs approximately every 23 days.
- Each installment has its own due date. View your installment due dates in CalCentral under My Finances.
- No housing deposit is required to accept an undergraduate housing offer.
Graduate student billing and payments
Graduate student housing payments are due the first of each month.
- Pay through CalCentral.
- Charges are posted 18 to 21 days before the first of the month.
- $500 security deposit is required to reserve graduate student campus housing.
Family student housing billing and payments
Family student housing payments are due the first of each month.
- Pay through CalCentral.
- Charges are posted to CalCentral 18 to 21 days before the first of the month, which is when the rent payments are due.*
- $500 security deposit and the first full month’s rent are required when accepting a housing offer to reserve family student housing.
*Financial aid recipients: If you receive financial aid for family student housing, set aside money from your refund for rent each month. Your aid will be disbursed to you as one-lump sum to cover your housing for the academic year, so we highly recommend that you budget and save those funds to cover your monthly rent.
Postdoctoral and visiting scholar housing billing and payments
- Charges are posted 18 to 21 days before the first of the month through the Housing Portal.
- Payments can be made via the Housing Portal or e-bill. Please note, the statements sent by e-bill may be out of date, so it is recommended that you check the Housing Portal for the most current billing information.
- $500 security deposit is required to reserve campus housing for scholars and paid through the Housing Portal.
- For scholars living in family housing, the first full month’s rent is required when accepting a housing offer.

To request that a standard payment credit be reapplied to housing charges, open a case with Cal Student Central. Include the payment date, payment amount, and which month of rent the payment should be applied to.
Security deposit refunds: If you previously lived in graduate student or family student housing and have not received your security deposit refund, contact Business Operations at busops@berkeley.edu for a status check.
