Laundry rooms equipped with washers and dryers are located in all UC Berkeley housing complexes. Some apartments have in-unit laundry.
Laundry included in housing rates for 2026-27
Laundry costs are now included in your housing contract rates. No payment is required to use the laundry facilities in your residence hall or apartment, and all washers and dryers have been converted to a simplified push-to-start system.
How to operate
To operate community washers and dryers, simply load your laundry and detergent, select your cycle, and press start. While payment is no longer required, you can still operate machines by mobile app. The app is a center for all things laundry, allowing you to report issues, check machine availability, and get notified when laundry is done.

Recommended laundry detergent
Please use a High-Efficiency (HE) laundry detergent. A liquid laundry detergent is strongly recommended, as laundry pods do not dissolve well in most campus washing machines and can cause washing to take twice as long.
Best practices for loading laundry
Loading detergent into the washing machine depends on the detergent type. For liquid, there is a separate compartment in the machine to pour it. For pods, put them in the bottom of the machine before loading clothes. When loading clothes in a front-load washer, make sure to leave five inches — or hand width of space — above laundry to avoid overstuffing.
The most common causes of problems for washers include overstuffing, improper laundry pod placement, and using too much detergent. For maintenance issues, reporting instructions are on the machine and in the app. Additional information is provided on flyers posted in the laundry rooms.
