- How do I schedule my Move-in COVID test?
You will receive in email this summer with details on how to schedule your Move-in COVID test. All students living in campus housing, whether fully vaccinated or not, will need to do a move-in UHS COVID test prior to getting keys. This will be organized as part of your check-in process. Testing will be provided at two campus locations, and you will need to show proof that you have taken a UC Berkeley COVID-19 test before you can move into your unit. Please plan to arrive for testing at least one to two hours before your Move-in time slot. You will not be charged for campus testing. We’ll provide further information soon via email about where and how to get your UHS COVID-19 test, as well as other important arrival guidelines. You may also visit UHS’ Fall 2021 arrival page.
- Do I have to get a COVID-19 test at Move-In even if I've been vaccinated?
Yes. Whether or not you've been vaccinated already, you will be required to get a Move-In COVID-19 test prior to getting your housing keys.
- For residence hall check in, will you accept COVID-19 tests from organizations other than UHS?
No. Whether or not you have been vaccinated, you are required to take a UC Berkeley COVID-19 test offered through University Health Services on your Move-in Day, one to two hours prior to your Move-in time slot. After you have been tested, you will receive a UC Berkeley testing confirmation slip that you will need in order to check into your housing unit. Tests offered through other organizations will not be accepted.
You will receive an email with details on how to schedule your Move-in COVID-19 test. Pick a time 1–2 hours before your Move-in time slot. An advance appointment for UHS COVID-19 testing is required.
- When may I move in?
For 2021-22, newly enrolled Berkeley students will be assigned a specific Move-In date between August 16 and August 18, 2021. Continuing students may move in beginning on August 22. Your Move-In day is determined by your housing assignment. You will receive an email notifying you that you need to select a one-hour time slot for your Move-In day. Please note that you must move in on your appointed day (neither earlier nor later), and you will only be able to choose a time slot on that day. Newly-enrolled freshmen will receive their specific Move-In date via email before the end of June while newly-enrolled transfer students will receive their Move-In date via email in mid-July.
- For August Move-In only: How do I select my Move-In time slot?
Students will be sent an email with instructions on how to sign up for a Move-In time slot. Once you receive the email, we encourage you to select a time slot as soon as possible. In situations when there are a high volume of users attempting to access the portal at the same time, there may be some delays.

- May I move in on a different day?
While we traditionally can accommodate different arrival days, due to required COVID-19 testing as well as public health and safety measures due to COVID-19, you will need to move-in on your assigned day and during your chosen time slot. Requests for a different move-in date can be sent via email to firstname.lastname@example.org; requests will be considered on a case by case basis, and may be unable to be granted based on COVID-19 testing capacity or other factors.
- Where do I go on my Move-In day?
When you arrive on campus, you'll first go to one of the two University Health Services COVID-19 Move-In testing locations at the time of your scheduled appointment.
For August 2021 Move In, please plan to arrive at least one to two hours before your move-in time slot so that you can get your UHS Move-In COVID-19 test, which you will need to schedule ahead of time. More information will be provided soon about how to schedule your test and where to go. After your test, proceed to your residence hall or apartment building in time for your Move-in time slot.

- For August Move-In only: What if I arrive after my move-in time slot?We need all students to respect their chosen time slot when moving in, as only a limited number of people can be allowed in each residence at a time and due to required Move-in COVID-19 testing immediately prior to check-in.
- How do I move my belongings?
The best way to get you and your belongings to your room is to bring them yourself, with the help of up to two family members or supporters. Berkeley’s central location makes it accessible to most shipping companies. Contact companies ahead of time to confirm any service changes due to COVID-19 and to check what items they will ship (e.g., electronics, bicycles, fragile items) and the maximum size and weight for packages.
Some carriers will hold the items you ship for one or more days at a nominal charge. A few deliver directly to your hall. If you will be using a delivery service to ship your belongings, please contact your housing unit (Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, Blackwell, Clark Kerr, Martinez Commons) for information about where items can be dropped off. Coordinate with storage companies in advance and be sure to allow time to arrange for moving your belongings from the shipping destination to your room. Reservations and/or prepayment may be required. Insurance may also be offered. Check what is available in your area.Have a plan for moving items into your room, as only you and your two helpers will be able to access your residence. We are unable to accept any packages arriving prior to your move-in day, and we cannot allow shipping companies direct access to student spaces. Note that your two helpers must be the same two people.
- Can I have more than two helpers if there are only two people with me in the building at a time?You will need to choose two unique helpers to assist you during your move-in time slot, and only those two people will have access to your building. The two-helper limit will help reduce the number of unique visitors who will cross paths inside housing units. This is a preventative health measure like the requirement for everyone to wear a face covering over the nose and mouth.
- As the parent (or relative, or friend) who assisted with moving in, can I spend the night in my student's residence hall?
No, you will need to stay at a hotel or other local accommodation. Family members and other supporters are not permitted to stay overnight in campus housing. Berkeley’s visitor bureau, Visit Berkeley, provides a list of local hotel options, the majority of which are California Hotel and Lodging Association “Clean and Safe Certified”, and available for those who need a clean and convenient space to stay while their students move in. - What's in my room?

Rooms are furnished with extra-long twin single beds and/or bunk beds, desks, chairs, and drawer space for each student. They also include closets, mirrors, wastebaskets, bookshelves, general lighting, and curtains.
New Sequoia private rooms in apartments may have Full XL size beds.
- What will I need for my room?
Review the Move-In Checklist for a full list of what to bring, and what not to bring. Also, if you bring your own hand truck, your move will be easier.
Please note: Due to safety concerns, halogen lights are not permitted.
Housekeeping services are provided in common areas only. We do not clean your room during the semester. A vacuum is available for use in your room, and you are encouraged to bring a few cleaning supplies like a spray cleaner and sponge.
- May I bring my own refrigerator and/or microwave?
No, personal microwaves and refrigerators are not allowed in residence hall rooms. Residence hall rooms include a MicroChill refrigerator and microwave combination in each room. Most residence hall contracts include an “Equipment Fee” for the use of the Microchill unit. The fee is split among residents in a room, so your Equipment Fee will be lower if you share a room. (Blackwell Hall residents will not pay the added fee, as the cost of these appliances were already incorporated into their rates.) The fee is included in our Living in a Residence Hall Financial Aid budget. Further information on the fee is available on the Rates page.
- Are there any live-in staff members in the residence halls?
Each residence hall complex is coordinated by a Resident Director, a professional staff member who oversees the residential program in their living community. Each hall or area within the Unit is staffed with well-trained and enthusiastic student staff who serve as resident assistants, theme program advisors, program assistants, and security coordinators. See the staff directory for more information. They assist with the residents’ educational and social activities and help maintain community standards. The primary goal of the Residential & Student Service Programs staff is to facilitate the formation of a community that encourages academic success and cultural development of students living in the University residence halls and family housing. This purpose extends beyond merely providing basic needs such as food and shelter; it also encourages the development of active living and learning environments.
- How do I get a parking permit for the semester or year?
Students are discouraged from bringing a car to campus. If a student brings a car to campus, he or she must contact Parking and Transportation about obtaining a parking permit.
- What about safety and security in the residence halls?
We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students in the residence halls. The Residential Life Health and Safety webpage has details on the services described below, as well as additional tips for staying safe on campus.
The Security Monitor Program is in place at Units 1, 2, and 3 and Martinez Commons. Security Monitors are student staff who have been hired to work in the residence halls. Their main responsibilities include assisting with the safety of the buildings at night and being a resource to residents. Clark Kerr and Foothill (including Stern) are monitored by the UCPD CSO program and have stations at both locations.
BearWALK (Night Safety Escort Service) is available to students by calling 642.WALK or visiting BearWalk.berkeley.edu. BearWALK provides student Community Service Officers (CSOs) in CSO uniforms, fully trained and equipped with radios, who are available to provide a walking escort to nearby residences, public transportation or parking facilities. The Night Walking Routes on the central campus have been identified as the most frequented and well-lighted paths to use at night. Students and staff are strongly encouraged to use them and to walk with friends at night. A map showing these routes will be provided at check-in.
- What kind of academic support is there for students?
Academic Services Centers exist in Units 1, 2, and 3, Foothill, Clark Kerr Campus and Martinez Commons. Services provided by Academic Services Centers include tutoring, computing centers, faculty programs, courses, and advising. Also available are study strategies workshops, quiet study areas, learning resources and opportunities for student involvement. All computing centers have Macintosh and IBM/PC compatible computers running the latest software applications.

- What is a Cal 1 Card?
The Cal 1 Card is your campus identification card, used for your meal plan, your library card, your debit card, and many other campus resources. The Cal 1 Card can also be used at off-campus resources as well. To get your Cal 1 Card, bring a valid (i.e. not expired) government-issued photo ID (e.g., State ID, Driver's License, or passport) on your move-in day. - How will I get my meals?
If you live in a residence hall, a standard meal plan (Blue Plan) is included in your room and board. Your Cal 1 Card will be automatically loaded on your meal plan, which is your student identification card.
- What medical precautions do I need to take before I come to campus?
The UC system will require students in 2021-22 to be vaccinated. We are strongly encouraging students to make every effort to be fully vaccinated before coming to campus in the fall. If you were vaccinated at a non-UC Berkeley vaccination site, please upload your vaccination information through the secure eTang portal as soon as you are able.

Each year many students lose valuable class time because of preventable illness. Before you come to Berkeley, there are a number of ways you can plan ahead to avoid or minimize illness. Hepatitis B vaccination is required as a condition of enrollment. The California State Legislature has mandated that first-time enrollees at the University of California who are under 19 years of age on August 26, 2015, provide proof of immunization against Hepatitis B as a condition of enrollment. The vaccine is a series of three doses. To assure compliance and protect your enrollment status, see "Hepatitis B" at uhs.berkeley.edu/students/immunization/hepatitisb.shtml and mail the form to the address indicated by the deadline listed online.
Update your other immunizations.
In addition to the standard pediatric immunization series and the Hepatitis B requirement explained above, the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the American College Health Association (ACHA) recommend:
- MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) - two doses at least one month apart if born after 1956
- Varicella (chicken pox) - two doses one month apart if you have never had chicken pox or if a blood test does not show immunity
- Tetanus/diphtheria/acellular pertussis (Tdap) given as a single dose to replace the next booster dose of Tetanus/diphtheria (Td) if the last dose of Td was >10 years earlier.
- Meningococcal meningitis vaccine - ACHA and the ACIP recommend meningococcal vaccination for college freshmen living in dormitories, other high risk persons and those wishing to reduce their risk of meningococcal disease (see University Health Services (UHS) for more information).
Plan for chronic conditions.
If you have a chronic medical condition such as diabetes, asthma or cancer, you may want to obtain a health summary from your recent health care provider(s) and bring it with you to campus. It will help the staff at UHS, located in the Tang Center, provide the best care possible. We recommend that you select a Tang Center Primary Care Provider and make an appointment soon after your arrival on campus to establish care and share this information.
Bring enough of your ongoing medications for the first month of school and a copy of your prescription. Plan ahead for refills.
Bring a first-aid kit, and make sure it includes a thermometer and ibuprofen or Tylenol.
Know how your medical plan works.
Health insurance is a condition of enrollment for UC students. Cal students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), and charged the SHIP fee on the campus E-Bill, unless they show that they have comparable coverage through another plan. Students may waive enrollment in SHIP by completing an online waiver form by the deadline listed online. SHIP covers services at UHS as well as emergency room visits, hospitalization, mental health care and off campus specialty services. SHIP also includes dental coverage.
Students who do not have SHIP should carry their insurance card with them at all times, and have easy access to a summary of their plan's benefits.
All students may use UHS services, regardless of whether they have SHIP or another health plan.

- How do I set up my internet connection in my room?
Wi-Fi access and in-room, wired connections are provided throughout the residence halls, supported by Student Technology Services.
AirBears2 is the recommended Wi-Fi network for students. To connect to AirBears2, you will first need to create a login key. Find instructions at airbears.berkeley.edu.
If you require an Ethernet (wired) network port, you can submit a request to activate a port in your room. See the Technology & Service page for information on how to submit a request with Student Technology Services.
Student Technology Services also provides direct technical support and troubleshooting to all residents and can help students with network or technical issues.
