Safety

Your safety and welfare are critically important. UC Berkeley provides a number of campus safety options. Here’s a brief summary of what you need to know; you can learn more about safety from our campus police.

The Campus Environment

UC Berkeley is a large campus, situated within a large urban community, the City of Berkeley; therefore, you should take an active role in ensuring your own safety and that of your community. There are various safety programs you should know about, both in the residence halls and on campus.

Night Safety Services

UC Berkeley offers comprehensive free night safety services, including night shuttle buses, a door-to-door service, and BearWalk, which provides a walking escort to your residence, car or public transport.

UCPD Community Service Officers: Clark Kerr, Foothill, and Stern

Community Service Officers (CSOs) are employed by the campus Police Department and assist the University community primarily in safety and security. They are not armed and do not make arrests. They do, however, patrol areas to ensure the security of the entries and surroundings. CSOs are stationed at the Clark Kerr campus in Building 1 and in the Stern/ Foothill main lobbies. You will see them in and around the residences between between 10:00 PM-3:00 AM.

Security Monitor Program: Martinez Commons, Blackwell, Unit 1, 2, and 3

Security Monitors are students who have received safety and security training and they are expected to enforce security standards developed to protect your community. During the evening hours, Security Monitors are stationed at the entrance of all the halls in Units 1, 2, 3, Martinez Commons, and Blackwell Hall. The Security Monitor is there to assist in the security of the community and to control access of residents and guests into the building. Upon entering these residence halls, all residents will be required to show their student identification cards. When guests visit you in your hall, you will be responsible to meet them in the lobby and have them sign in.

Security Monitor hours are: Sunday-Wednesday 9 PM-2 AM and Thursday-Saturday 10 PM-3 AM
