Housing Updates for 2020-21 and COVID-19 Response

Summer Housing

Summer 2021 Update: Cal Housing is committed to offering student housing during the 2021 Summer Sessions, which will be offered via remote instruction. Whether you are enrolled in courses or just staying in Berkeley this summer, Cal Housing encourages all UC Berkeleys students to apply now!

Incoming and current UC Berkeley students: We welcome you to apply to live on campus this summer. The application period opened on February 1, 2021.

Visiting (Summer Only) Students: At this time, we are unable to house visiting summer students this year in our residence halls and apartments. In typical years, we are able to offer summer housing for:

  • Students from other institutions who are enrolled in Summer Sessions
  • Students from other institutions who are doing internships in the area
  • Anyone who needs short-term housing

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and related public health guidelines that prohibit in-person events through at least the end of the year, Cal Housing can only provide housing to Undergraduates, Graduates, Visiting Scholars, and Posdoctoral Fellows for Summer 2021.

Please note that Cal Housing will continue to take inquiries for summer 2022 and beyond. Please send inquiries by emailing summerhousing@berkeley.edu. Our response time may be slower during this temporary closure, but we will get back to you as quickly as possible. We look forward to working with you in 2022.

Incoming UC Berkeley students attending either Summer Bridge or Global Edge: We do not yet have details on housing for the Summer Bridge and Global Edge programs, due to the changing nature of the global pandemic. Please check back in April for more information.

COVID-19 Policies: If you live in campus housing during the summer, you will be required to adhere to public health policies designed to reduce transmission of COVID-19. While the policies have not yet been set for the summer term, these policies may include mandatory surveillance testing for COVID-19, reduced occupancy of residence halls, a no-guests policy, and the closure of many common spaces (such as lounges, gyms, etc.) More information will be provided end of April and May.

Plans for student housing are contingent upon continuing evaluation of public health conditions and compliance with state and local public health requirements. Occupancy levels in campus housing for summer 2021 depend on public health guidance from UC, state, county and local public health officials.
